Normal attendance bookings can be done online so book today to ensure your spot! Welcome aboard Telstra and UWS as new Corporate Partners for the Chamber. Our association with Telstra of course is well documented especially their support of the Small Business Support Group Series. UWS has had a long and successful association through various avenues including training, research, and surveys. We are pleased to know they have recognised the benefits of upgrading membership. We say a very big thank you for this commitment to us all! The room was really full of great ideas at last week’s member information night about the numerous Ulysses visit opportunities here next March. Michael Ekert offered the facilities of the Emu Plains Sports Club for us to hear Peter Bernard from the Nepean Ulysses Club and Gladys Reed from City Centre Association regale us with their observations and experiences of past successful events. Don Hodgson from Ducati Penrith, Steve Defina from Bass2 Bait, David Amor from Signwave Penrith joined Jenni McCreadie from Balance Healthcare, Heike Tye from Hogs Breath Café St Marys and Julie Parashko from Steppin’ Out Duo. Gai Lambert from the Good Guys came along and is already heavily involved as a committee member of the PCCA. Helen and Luke Wakeling know their Nepean Belle will be a popular tourist attraction but came along to encourage others to get behind the week long festivities. Our first networking function for the new DIG [Dunheved Industrial Group] was held at St Mary’s Leagues Club where GM Rod Desborough and Functions manager Jennifer Lawless made us feel very welcome. The crowd was addressed by David Trist who is fondly known by so many as Mr Dunheved. He and another local identity Gil Kommer gave some great background history for those younger and newer to the area. Joining the group were Greg Holden from Platinum Electrical Contractors, Tony Jones from WB Jones Staircases and Mark Grundy from Corinthian Doors. Both men have been very active on the previous action group for Dunheved. Jeremy Joyce from Jaybro Civil and Safety chatted with Len Montgomery from 3D Scaffolding and Laurence Thomson from Laser Wizard. The results of the recent meetings and networking group are available on our web site under Business Matters. You can see the priorities list for the next few months. Sun-Masamune certainly provide an eye opening experience for those in attendance last night at our very own world famous Saki factory. Allan Noble was in his element showcasing his spotlessly clean facilities and telling us about the history and production phases. The presentation and tour had many of us spell bound and we will all look at rice through other eyes. Enjoying the function were Maralyn Kastel from The Detail Devils, Eddie Taylor from ET Business Development, Luke and Melinda Witten from Berger Piepers and Michael Ashcroft from Bank of Queensland. Ane Jensen, the young Danish civil engineer student doing a stint with Penrith City Council also came along. Her special interest is in the innovation of workplace logistics. Supportive husbands Jim Kemp and Paul Field were also along to partner wives Linda and Gina, two of our hard working Executive members. Allan’s total commitment to his all Australian product is producing many challenges brought on by the severity and length of the drought. Some of his observations and ideas were an inspiration to many of us who have also had to face major stumbling blocks to overcome. Inspiration, sharing, support and success is what these nights are all about so if you are yet to join us please come along very soon. We have a lot of fun too!
• Reform of the taxation system Or are any of these topics of concern to you as a business operator?
• What are the government’s plans with regards addressing Skills Shortages within the trades, apart from Trade High Schools?? These are just some of the comments from members. Come along and here how the Federal Treasurer responds. Please book online now. The Chamber Race Night on September 25th is creating great interest and some races have already been sponsored by members. Keep in mind the special package prices are only on for the first 75 people to book. There is plenty of room for more people of course but this is the limited special deal, such great value and typical of the ongoing support of the Paceway for the Chamber. Don’t you miss out! Ask you staff, family and friends to come along for some great fun. AND REMEMBER TO FROCK UP! Please book online now. Please keep in mind I am always keen to hear what you are doing in the business community with new ideas, or perhaps you have great employees to brag about. Tell me and I can tell others.
Have a great week! What is the managers job? It is to direct the resources and the efforts of the business toward opportunities for economically significant results. This sounds trite -- and it is. But every analysis of actual allocation of resources and efforts in business that I have ever seen or made showed clearly that the bulk of time, work, attention, and money first goes to problems rather than to opportunities, and, secondly, to areas where even extraordinarily successful performance will have minimal impact on results: Peter Drucker
Efficiency is doing things right; effectiveness is doing the right things: Peter Drucker This award is generously sponsored by Little & Rabie Betta Electrical. Do you promote the Chamber to others? Do you invite a guest along to functions? Do you use member contacts? If you are this active then you may well be in the running for Member of the Month. Let us know. Normal attendance bookings can be done online so book today to ensure your spot! --------------------------------------------------------- Jills Journeys out and about I am hard at work again after my short break travelling 4000k around this amazing country of ours, just breathtaking. I was able to look at how the towns we visited displayed themselves, from a doing business perspective. And I joined some locals on our Bash, people I have known previously but did not realise operated businesses in the region. I am pleased to say they are now keen to be active again in our vibrant Chamber. Peter Ward from Ward Lawyers went on his first Bash and seems keen to front up again in 2009 when we all hope we go north to warmer, dryer places. So much for global warming on this last trip, no sight of it at all! Paul Graham from PF Concrete at Emu Plains has done a number of Bashes and he had fun stirring up St Marys Leagues Club CEO, Rod Desborough also doing his very first. But please dont ask them to tell any tales. What happens on the Bash stays on the Bash! ooo We raised over $2 million for special needs kids. We spent on average, $80k per town we visited on food, fuel, hospitality, accommodation, gifts, laundry, motor parts and accessories, souvenirs and of course retail therapy. Some places we will revisit and others we will not. It depends of course on our individual and collective experiences. So what can I share with you about the positive and negatives I observed along those miles which are lessons for our own preparation to embrace and enjoy, and benefit from the Ulysses AGM here next March. The Ulysses AGM is OUR perfect opportunities to show case this region to an instant crowd. I know we attract large numbers throughout the year to utilise many of our sporting and cultural activities. But generally they are only very short stays or days trips. We have 5000 - 6000 discerning people, many professionals with obvious disposable income visiting us for a week. They want to know we really want them to be here. They seek quality, service and respect. They want to enjoy themselves and have fun. They want to take advantage of all the amazing things we have on offer in the region. People will return if they have a good experience. We talk about networking and the importance of it to meet new clients, and do business. Let me assure you word of mouth networking- amongst this crowd can make or break you. These people will quickly recommend you, or they will very quickly tell people to avoid you. And not only during the week of the event but when they have gone home. Cooma is currently getting a bagging from the Bashers because of the inflated accommodation prices. Sure it is high season for skiers, but the inflated prices for beds was not viewed fairly by those there for other reasons than snow and related activities. 5 Must DO things to make the most of Ulysses 2009
Recognise the unique opportunity of this event, support and participate, if you dont your competitor probably will consider your stock levels very carefully dont run out of the obvious Recognise the long term possibilities of return visits and follow up quickly on any leads you get 5 Must NOT Do things
Do not ignore the event
Do not presume your product or service is not relevant
Do not rip people off with inflated charges, word of mouth spreads rapidly Hope to see you come along to Allan Nobles Sun Masamune Saki Factory next Wednesday, 27th for the Telstra Small Business Support Group. It is a fascinating place and the taste testing will surprise you. The history of the business and its successes outside Japan are a testament to much hard work and commitment using quality Australian products. Be sure to join us, book online now! ooo Also happening next week on Tuesday 26th, is the inaugural Dunheved Industrial Group networking, so if you are a local St Marys business or servicing those in that sector come along for an update on what is planned for the short and longer term to achieve revitalisation of the area. Again make sure you book online to join us! ooo Places are filling fast for the Wayne Swan Luncheon on 5th September. Have you made your bookings yet? Online of course! ooo Of course September is when the AGM of the Chamber will be held so start to think about how you could be more involved. Nomination forms will be available very soon. ooo I highlighted a while back our intention to include a member to member online discount and specials offers section, on our web site. It is now time to think seriously what you can offer to other Chamber members. Offers must be valid for 6 months. We wish to commence these great Member benefits from 1st October. We must receive your offers by mid September. ooo Have a great week! ------------------------------------------------ Consider this..
